Would Never Recommend This Agency to Anyone

I volunteered at 4 Paws for a few years, fostering their "service dogs in training." I'll start off by saying it's obviously a non-profit, but some how the CEO and the head trainer managed to give themselves a salary of over $100,000 a year. The average salary for a non-profit CEO is $35,000... they choose their dogs based on temperaments, having no look at conformation or possible health risks. Their german shepherds conformation was horrendous. You can tell in their goldens they'll have severe hip issues later in life. They breed the puppies there, then at 12 weeks they're either sent into their 6 week long prison program or they're put in the main building sitting in a kennel. ALL the dogs at 4 Paws sit in the same kennels used for transporting dogs in airplanes, which I think is abusive. They're let out every 2 hours if they're lucky. NO dogs are in "training" unless they're in a foster home or in advanced training. Otherwise they just sit in kennels and receive zero socialization or training. The dogs they foster out are either given to college students that have no idea what they're doing, or they're taken in by families. They're usually in the foster's care for 4 months. 4 months of socialization and only 4 months living in an actual house setting. They are then returned to 4 Paws and either sent back to prison, or they sit in kennels for months until they decide what to with them. Many of their dogs are very poorly trained. One trainer admitted to me that some dogs only get 2 months of advanced training. Other service dog organizations have dogs in training with a REAL educated trainer for 2 years. 4 Paws dogs maybe get 2 months of professional obedience training if they're lucky. I've heard many dogs that stopped alerting to children's seizures or their behavioral issues are just out of hand, mainly because the dog is never properly taught how to live in a home. They're only used to sitting in crates for all of their lives. This org claims the dogs cost $22,000, which may have been the case if they were actually in training for the time they say. But in reality they're worth about $5,000, and are basically scamming people. All in all, I would never recommend this organization to anyone. I think it's abusive how they treat the dogs and the conditions they force them to live in. The CEO has absolutely zero professionalism and zero business skills. I've seen dogs placed that were so terrified of vacuums and blow dryers that it would run anywhere it could to get away. This could hurt a child. They're in it for the large amount of dogs they place so they can receive their $14,000 for every one of them. Please look into other non-profits that aren't in it for the money.
